More Than Just A Six-Goal Wonder?

Frankie Bunn, Newcastle United's recently-appointed Under-18s coach, is happy to be part of Newcastle's future. Bunn will forever be associated with the six goals he scored for Joe Royle’s Oldham in a 7-0 win over Scarborough in the third round of the League Cup in 1989. Frankie Bunn: “It’s always nice to be reminded. “It’s funny, one of the boys just mentioned he’d seen it on YouTube. Word’s getting around!” “Newcastle is a fantastic club – it’s good to be here. “Youth football’s on the up again. Clubs are now realising, with their financial constraints, the youth department is quite important. “The Academy system’s improved facilities, not only for the first team, but the youth side as well. “We’re here to try and produce players for our first team, first and foremost. If not, to have a career in football. “They’re vital for football clubs, perhaps even more so now. “Middlesbrough have had a good name, along with Newcastle and Sunderland. There are some fantastic players around the area. “I was quite young when I had to retire. “If you can play until you’re 35, you tend to think of what you want to do after football. “At the age of 26, I was quite numb. It was a shock to the system. “It was my knee. I had a few problems, especially playing on the plastic (pitch at Boundary Park). It was unforgiving on the joints. It was a shame, but you have to move on.”
