Magpies: Kinnear is on the mend

Newcastle United have received a positive update on the condition of manager Joe Kinnear, who is recovering from triple heart bypass surgery. The Magpies boss is not expected to resume control until the summer. In his absence, Tyneside legend Alan Shearer has been appointed as short-term chief at St James' Park, as the club look to stave off the threat of Premier League relegation. Newcastle managing director Derek Llambias confirmed Kinnear's latest medical tests have come up clear, but insists the Irish coach will not return in a working capacity before the end of the term. Llambias told the Northern Echo: "Joe had his tests on Monday and the doctors were pleased with him. "He's lost two stone in weight and has passed all his tests with flying colours. He's on the mend - in two months' time he should be fully fit."
