Magpies attract US attention

An American consortium are the latest group to be interested in buying Newcastle and hope to do so within a week. The consortium is fronted by businessman Geoff Sheard, the man who tried to take over Sheffield Wednesday last year, but it is understood that Sheard does not have the funds required to run the football club himself. The Americans behind the deal are believed to have some sort of background in US sports and are keen to use their expertise to help turn the Magpies into a worldwide brand. Sheard is currently in talks with Seymour Pierce, the bank charged with helping current owner Mike Ashley sell the club, and the entrepreneur wanted to make it clear that he is not the man acquiring the club. "It's not me buying the club - that should be made very clear," he told the Chronicle. "I've put together a package for a group who want to come in and take over the club. That's what they want to do given the opportunity to do so. "Talks have been going on for a couple of weeks now."
