Newcastle United's fans were relocated for the derby game to the top tier of the North Stand, well away from pitch side.

It was meant to keep them up in the Gods, so they couldn't be heard. But they still made their presence felt as they willed Alan Pardew’s players on.

Danny Simpson: “It helps hearing them.

“I don’t know how many were there, but you could definitely hear them.

“They were so noisy. With them, you want to keep working hard and keep going.

“It was disappointing for everybody connected with Newcastle to gain just a point.

“On the other hand, being down to 10 men, we’ve done well.”
