Police arrested 29 people at the derby - five before the match in Newcastle and eight inside St James's Park during the game.

After the match, four arrests were made in Sunderland and 12 in Newcastle. One of the men arrested at the game was Daniel Purvis of Fieldway, Jarrow.

The 24-year-old was charged with possessing a firework or flare at a sports event and will appear at Sunderland Magistrates’ Court on May 13.

Northumbria Police has named some of those arrested in connection with disorder before, during and after the Tyne-Wear derby.

Stephen Barnett, of Tynemouth Road, Howden, North Tyneside, was the first to appear before Newcastle Magistrates. He has denied three charges relating to the disorder after allegedly threatening police with a screwdriver.

Before the game, three men aged 40, 37 and 27 were arrested for affray and a man aged 31 was arrested for disorderly conduct. All have been bailed pending further enquiries.

Craig McGee, 31, of Hutton Grove in Haswell, Durham, was charged with causing fear or provocation of violence and is due to appear at Sunderland Magistrates’ Court on May 9.

A 53-year-old man was cautioned for being drunk in a sports ground.Michael Briggs, 27, of Strandford Road in Seaham, is charged with being drunk and disorderly and will appear at Sunderland Magistrates' Court on May 13.

Craig Lee Stanworth, 21, of Dean Park in Ferryhill, County Durham, is charged with disorderly conduct and will appear at Newcastle Magistrates' Court on May 9.

During the disorder in Newcastle following the match, four males were arrested on suspicion of violent disorder. One aged 45 was arrested by Northumbria Police following an incident involving a police horse, and two men aged 41 and 18 and a youth aged 15 were arrested by British Transport Police. All have been bailed pending further enquiries.

In addition, men aged 32, 20 and 44, and a woman aged 21 received penalty notices for being drunk and disorderly, and a 25-year-old man received a summons for being drunk and disorderly.

Two men aged 19 were also arrested for affray and bailed, while a 25 year-old man arrested for assault has also been bailed.

Following the match in Sunderland, women aged 30 were given fixed penalty notices for being drunk and disorderly, and a 24-year-old man was arrested for criminal damage and bailed pending further enquiries.

Anthony Paul Holyoak, 21, of Brandling Street in Roker is charged with drunk and disorderly and is due to appear at Sunderland Magistrates' Court on May 1.
