Llambias ultimately paid the price for bad campaign - someone had to go - and Alan Pardew insisted it wouldn't be him!
The strange appointment of Joe Kinnear, which was initially endorsed by the managing director, saw Llambias have a rethink and within hours he resigned from his post at St James’ Park.
Had United parted company with Llambias and then appointed Bob Moncur, Peter Beardsley or someone else they could relate to, it would have been a step up.
Llambias was never a healthy fit in the position - he never listened to what fans had to say; spoke for a man (Ashley) who is simply NOT a football man; and had an arrogance that bordered on contempt.
Yet there are many fans who simply don’t want to entertain Kinnear.
That fury has perhaps softened the impact of Llambias quitting the Magpies because, quite frankly, they never liked Llambias anyway.
So what of Llambias?
He arrived on Tyneside as an unknown former casino boss.
He made it clear that he didn’t want to court publicity and didn’t want to communicate with the black-and-white audience.
Llambias got off to a bad start and never fully recovered.
Too many times he wheeled out his favourite saying of hiding “in his bunker”.
But you can’t bury your head in the sand on Tyneside. People want to know what’s going on at their club.
It was a stringent review of budgets and tightening of purse strings that saw stars like Andy Carroll, Kevin Nolan, Jose Enrique and Joey Barton all leave.
Not all Llambias' fault, I admit.
Ashley has never spoken and Llambias bordered on paranoia when it came to being quoted.
Interviews would be few and far between.
Even when Pardew was given the job, he was wheeled out to face the media alone, as Llambias didn't was to face questions about the sacking of Chris Hughton.
And while many fans wondered if Alan Pardew would be replaced as boss, it appears that Llambias has paid the price for a poor campaign last time around.
Was he pushed or did he walk?
He couldn’t have been chuffed by Kinnear’s comments that he was being sidelined and moved to a position in finance.
Or Kinnear’s rant at fans when he said: “Would they rather I bring Lambazee back in?”
