Cassidy became non-executive chairman of the Plc when Freddy Shepherd and Douglas Hall stood down from the board after a tabloid sting the following year, before resigning when the disgraced pair returned to the fold in December 1998.
He wrote a book – Newcastle United: The Day the Promises Had to Stop – which was published in 2010 and reissued last year.
And though now based between his homes in London and Leicestershire, Cassidy retains an informed take on the events of the past week.
Denis Cassidy: “As an Elswick lad, I’ve been watching Newcastle United since 1943, and was invited to join the board when the club floated on the stock exchange.
“I suppose you could say I’ve had a front row seat at St James’ Park but even I was surprised by what happened last week.
“You’ve got a gem of a football club, a jewel in the garbage of recent history, I call it.
"But there’s been a terrible trampling on the community and its values, and the most frustrating thing is trying to predict what’s on Mike Ashley’s mind, because he obviously doesn’t talk to the supporters.
“It’s a long way from the early days of drinking in the Bigg Market and ‘Call me Mike’.
“I wrote an open letter in my book at the time, urging fans to give him a chance. What’s followed has been mayhem. It’s tragic.
“A director of football is a concept I actually agree with.
“it’s like a chairman and the managing director or chief executive in a business, but their roles have to be clearly defined and they must work together.
“But Joe Kinnear? Then Derek Llambias resigns. Why?
"Perhaps he couldn’t go on with something he didn’t agree with. And what must Alan Pardew think of it all?
“Honesty, face the people.
“Talking to people is just a start, but why not have a meeting at St James’ Park for all season ticket holders? Stand up and prepare to be quizzed by them.
“The problem here is that, with the club no longer being a public company, the man who makes the decisions doesn’t have to answer for them.
"There are no shareholders to sell their shares, if they’re unhappy.
“But there is one of the biggest money-generating fanbases in the country, so the option is there for supporters to vote with their feet.
“But when I’ve asked them why they don’t, they say ‘Divven’t be daft, what else is there to do on a Saturday afternoon – gan shopping?’
"Unfortunately, that’s partly the root of the problem.“
