Kalou: 'We Can Win At Newcastle'!
Salomon Kalou says Carlo Ancelotti will bounce back, win at Newcastle, and lead Chelsea to the title at the end of the season. "Newcastle away is tough but we have the confidence back and know we can win the game. "He (Carlo Ancelotti) is very important, he doesn't put pressure on the players. "Even without winning we are still training the same way and doing the same things. "He has that calm and brings it to the team, making us play to our full potential. "When you play for Chelsea and the team is under pressure, you don't want the whole team to be scared because it's difficult to perform. He (Ancelotti) has that belief that everything is going to be good if we work hard and continue to train the way we do. "It worked in the past, last year we had a difficult time too but we didn't change anything. He brings that self-belief and it helps to keep the pressure off the team." "It is a real joy working with him and we believe we'll have a great season. We just focus on the games and try to win. Last year we won two trophies and this year we're still in three." Att: 52,112 Even Alan Shearer's return could not prevent Newcastle slipping deeper into relegation trouble as Chelsea closed to within a point of leaders Manchester United. The Magpies completed a hat-trick of successive home defeats by top-four sides as the Blues left St James' Park with all three points just as United and Arsenal have done in recent weeks. There was plenty to admire in the effort, commitment and determination shown by Shearer's players, but ultimately they failed to take any of the handful of chances they created, although skipper Michael Owen was convinced his 73rd-minute shot had crossed the line before Ashley Cole hooked it clear. By contrast, Frank Lampard and Florent Malouda were clinical when their chances arrived within nine second-half minutes. Newcastle now have just seven games in which to save themselves from relegation, the first of them at fellow strugglers Stoke next weekend. A crowd of 52,112 turned out desperate for the Shearer effect to kick in straight away, but left under little illusion as to the struggle ahead. The Magpies knew they would struggle to match Guus Hiddink's men for innate skill and fluency, and decided to make up for that with effort and sheer determination. Nicky Butt set the tone with a rugged early challenge on Michael Essien, and Jonas Gutierrez was fortunate to escape punishment for a two-footed lunge at John Terry which drew extended protests from the Blues skipper. Chelsea rarely sidestep a battle and a tense encounter unfolded with the visitors pressing repeatedly, but meeting stern resistance and Newcastle attempting to hit them on the break. Clear chances were few and far between with Steve Harper having to pull off a fine 19th-minute save to keep out Salomon Kalou's diving header and Habib Beye just getting a touch to divert Nicolas Anelka's shot into the side-netting 14 minutes before the break. The Magpies created only one real opening when Obafemi Martins, perhaps surprised that Jose Enrique's low cross had been allowed to reach him, stabbed it just wide of the post with his knee as he reacted late. But for Shearer, who spent much of the first 45 minutes of his reign stalking the technical area and barking out orders, there was much with which to be pleased. However, he will have been concerned with the lack of quality of delivery from his wide men, and in particular with Ryan Taylor's inability to avoid the first man from a series of free-kicks in promising areas. Owen and Martins combined to almost open Chelsea up within three minutes of the restart, but the visitors responded swiftly. Essien drilled a long-range shot high and wide, but Malouda's clever spin took him in on goal with 51 minutes gone and Harper had to make another excellent block at his near post. Martins fired wide under pressure from Terry and Alex three minutes later, but the opening goal came with 56 minutes gone, and it went to Chelsea. Fabricio Coloccini's clearance was blocked and the ball ran to Lampard, who poked it through to Anelka. The Frenchman was forced wide, but managed to chip a shot over Harper and on to the woodwork, with Lampard easily heading the rebound into the empty net. Jonas might have done better when he headed substitute Damien Duff's 64th-minute cross straight at Petr Cech, and his side's plight worsened within seconds. Anelka flicked on Cech's clearance and Lampard slid the ball into the path of Malouda, who despatched a left-foot shot across Harper and into the net. Owen thought he had pulled a goal back with 17 minutes remaining when his deflected shot was cleared by Ashley Cole, with replays suggesting the ball had crossed the line. The 29-year-old was in again two minutes later when Martins played him into space inside the box, but his left-foot shot was saved easily by Cech. But it was the visitors who finished with a flourish as substitutes Michael Ballack and Franco di Santo, Malouda, Kalou and Lampard all went close. Disappointed applause rang around St James' on the final whistle as the home fans trudged away hoping against hope that Shearer could yet be their saviour. Chelsea fought back against MSK Zilina to preserve their 100% record in the Champions League and ease the pressure on under-fire boss Carlo Ancelotti thanks to second-half goals from Daniel Sturridge and Florent Malouda. Ancelotti's side had trailed to Babatounde Bello's shock 19th-minute opener for the Group F minnows but Sturridge levelled six minutes after the break. Malouda then grabbed a vital winner for the Barclays Premier League champions when he slotted home at the far post four minutes from time to ensure Chelsea finish in top spot. Zilina, battered by Marseille in their last Champions League outing, had arrived with an attacking mentality that gave Chelsea's youthful side something to worry about in the early stages. Chelsea first threatened the visitors in the 17th minute when Gael Kakuta sent over a cross that almost dropped into the net at the far post. But Chelsea hit trouble in the 19th minute when Bello sliced his way through the home defence and coolly slotted the ball home. It was another shock to the Blues who have been left reeling in recent weeks by events both on and off the pitch. The shock and abrupt departure of Ray Wilkins arrived in the middle of a domestic slump that has seen them lose three out of their last four Premier League games. Ancelotti, who rejected rumours he was set to quit the Blues over the weekend, cut a lonely figure in contrast to the delirious Zilina bench. Chelsea fought back when Kakuta put Sturridge in behind the defence but the former Manchester City striker saw his shot slash wide of the near post. But Zilina almost added a second on the half-hour when Tomas Majtan got clear to test Ross Turnbull at the near post. The Chelsea keeper was lucky to claw the ball away from danger as Zilina continued to threaten. Seconds later Sturridge forced Martin Dubravka into a fine save when he sent a 20-yard angled drive towards the top corner. Malouda should have levelled the scores in the 35th minute but he sent a tame header into the arms of Dubravka from six yards. Malouda then tried his luck from 25 yards but he failed to find the target. Sturridge wasted another chance in the 39th minute when he somehow sent a six-yard shot over the bar, although Chelsea were at least beginning to exert some pressure. Chelsea replaced Kakuta with Salomon Kalou at half-time and the Ivory Coast striker sent a shot just over the bar from 20 yards straight from the re-start. Chelsea equalised in the 51st minute when Kalou's cross eluded everyone in the six-yard box apart from Sturridge at the far post, the striker slipping the ball through the legs of the Zilina keeper to make it 1-1. Chelsea were now in the ascendancy and Ramires sent a 25-yard drive just past the post as the Blues increased the tempo. Didier Drogba almost put Chelsea in front on the hour but his free-kick was tipped onto the crossbar by Dubravka and Branislav Ivanovic headed over from close range when the ball was played back into the area. Chelsea were now dominating and pushed on in search of the winner. In the 69th minute Sturridge curled a low shot around the post after Chelsea has superbly carved open the Zilina defence. Patrick Van Aanholt was denied by the woodwork in the 71st minute when his thunderous 20-yard drive cannoned back off the left-hand upright. Midfielder Josh McEachran, who had been sublime all night with a range of delightful passes, put Drogba clear in the 75th minute but the striker fired high over the bar. But Chelsea ensured they maintained their 100% record in Europe when Malouda slotted home at the far post after Drogba had headed substitute Nicolas Anelka's cross into his path. Att: 22,203 Kevin Nolan got the reception he hoped for from the Bolton fans, as he made first appearance at the Reebok Stadium since his £4million move to Newcastle in January last year. He said it was always going to be an emotional day for him, having played at the Reebok for ten years and wearing the captain's armband for four of them. But he may have had a tear in his eye as he walked out onto the pitch ... but he wasn't the only one in black and white crying at the final whistle! This was a shambles! We had the return of Danny Guthrie and Alan Smith in midfield and they were 'ten miles back in the rear view mirror" as the Bolton midfielers left them standing. Rumour has it Smith is wanted by Sam Allardyce and Blackburn will make an offer in the January transfer window - and I would take Big Sam's hand off! The former Leeds striker is a pale shadow of what he used to be, and he may be able to be the thug in a Championship side (as he was last term), but the Premiership is too big a stage for him these days. Kevin Davies and Johan Elmander scored two each and Newcastle finished with 10 men after the late sending-off of Fabricio Coloccini. It could have been so different for Nolan, who could have given his side a stunning advantage after less than a minute, when he seized on a mistake by Paul Robinson and cut into the box from the right where he blazed a fine chance high and wide. That was the highlight of the good start Newcastle made and they came to rue that miss. The Trotters got a grip on the game and their big opening came from their old skipper. Nolan handled an attempted cross by Lee in the box and referee Howard Webb pointed to the spot, Davies striking low to Tim Krul's left to give Bolton the lead. With Bolton now well on top, Davies tried a left-foot snap-shot which Krul held at the second attempt, then he almost shrugged off the attention of three defenders to create a 27th minute chance before Danny Simpson intervened. The visitors fashioned a rare chance in the 31st minute when Jose Enrique got round the back of the Bolton defence and dribbled a deep cross which was missed in the box by Carroll, making a sluggish return from midweek England duty. Mike Williamson's foul on Elmander led to Bolton's second in the 38th minute. Matt Taylor slammed his free-kick against the bar and as Newcastle blundered their attempts to clear, the ball sprang loose to Lee who fired low past Krul. Lee came close to a second when he just failed to connect with a Davies cross, but Newcastle could have reduced the deficit in the last minute of the half when Carroll just missed a Danny Guthrie cross. Nolan was booked for barging Elmander as the pair chased a loose ball on the edge of the box before Taylor slammed the resulting free-kick into the wall as Coyle's men pushed for a match-winning fourth. It duly arrived in the 72nd minutes when Elmander was first to a long ball up-field from Jaaskelainen, shrugging off Coloccini before sliding the ball under the advancing Krul. Things got worse for Newcastle in the 75th minute when Coloccini appeared to elbow Elmander as they battled for possession down the right flank, and the full-back was red-carded by referee Webb.
