It's Time For Anita To Prove His Worth!

Vurnon Anita made a fabulous goal against Chelsea last week, and it has been the highlight of a rather disappointing start to his Newcastle career.

After he ducked for Yaya Toure to score in the opening game of the campaign (against Man City), I questioned if the Dutchman has what it takes in the Premier League.

To be honest, it wasn't just the City game ... I questioned him every time he pulled on the Newcastle shirt last season!

He is very slight, and not exactly 'built' for arguably the most physical top flight league in Europe.

Former Chelsea defender Frank Labeouf said: "I hated the English league. It was very tough and, having spent my early career in France, it was a culture shock.

"In France you don't expect strikers to be so rough. Alan Shearer would knock you from pillar to post for 90 minutes! It's the toughest league in the world."

But being so small, Anita rarely holds the ball for long. The ball is moved on in typical Dutch 'Total Football' style, quick and short - usually sideways or back.

Far too often the 'safe' ball. And rarely does he dwell on it for long.

What does he add to the team? It depends how Alan Pardew intends using him.

Vurnon Anita: “We have to wait and see what the manager does.

“If I play, great – I’m happy. But if I’m not, I’ll work hard to get in the team.

“Maybe I’ll get a chance to come on and make a big impact again. We will wait and see.

“It’s not the first time I have had this. I had the same thing at Ajax, so I know what to do.

“I’m a player that wants to work hard all the time.

“If I come on, I want to show everybody what I can do. That’s no problem.

“It came out great for me in this game, but not only for me, also the team.

“It’s a team performance, so everybody’s happy, and also the supporters.

“Remy finished it well. He played a good game. We’re also happy for him, the team and the supporters.

“After a good result, everybody is happy, but we must keep both feet on the ground, of course.

“We’ve got a tough game against Spurs on Sunday. We must work hard again to get a good result.

“We got a boost off the Chelsea game, but Spurs is going to be hard.

“They’re a very good team. We must work hard from the start to the end of the game.”

His future at Newcastle depends on one person - HIMSELF!
