United were in dire trouble long before Joe Kinnear’s peculiar appointment, and 90% of it was due to the Toon manager who had the season from hell.
But the owner is hardly blameless, too, and a motion was passed by fed-up United fans last week demanding owner Mike Ashley sell up and get out of town.
Ashley and Pardew have slipped under the radar somewhat since JFK arrived to hog the spotlight.
Last season’s shocking performances at home to the Mackems and Liverpool must go down as the worst in living memory, and had absolutely nothing to do with Kinnear and everything to do with them and gutless players.
Players get away with murder. They are lauded when results are positive but the manager or owner takes the flak when things go wrong.
Pardew, John Carver and Steve Stone must take a look at themselves and candidly assess what went wrong because only then can it be put right.
While the partnership of Kinnear and Pardew is crucial, not many believe it will work.
Derek Llambias was Ashley's mouthpiece, however limited he was in his utterings.
Never a man on the same wavelength as the fans, but God forbid, he could be Shakespear compared to Caveman Kinnear!
Ashley runs United the way Roman Abramovich runs Chelsea – deaf and mute – but the Londoners have others in place further down the ladder who take the strain.
The difference between St James' Park and Stamford Bridge is the fact our cupboard is bare at Newcastle, so Abramovich can do what the hell he wants because he has taken 13 major trophies to the The Bridge in his ten years and the fans back him.
Ashley is never going to change. He is never going to speak directly to the fans.
United were in a mess last season and they still are. Nothing has changed, except the introduction of Kinnear.
No new players have signed, the manager and the coaches are the same, tactics will be as confusing as ever, oh yes, and the owner will continue making controversial decisions without a single explanation.
At the end of the day ... it's still the same mess ... but (for the time being) all of our hatred is vented at Kinnear ... and that's why Pardew has been hiding under the bed for the last three weeks.
It's when he comes out of his hiding hole perhaps we should start and worry.
