Injury rules out Carroll

Newcastle have been dealt a major blow by the news that striker Andy Carroll is out of Sunday's Barclays Premier League trip to Wigan. The 21-year-old is due to undergo a scan on a thigh injury, but he has already been ruled out of the game at the DW Stadium and is struggling to make Wednesday night's clash with West Ham at St James' Park. That will come as a major blow to manager Alan Pardew as his side attempts to bounce back from successive defeats by Manchester City and Tottenham over Christmas. Carroll has scored 11 goals to date this season and his form has been a major factor in the club's solid start to the campaign. However, their blank holiday programme has seen the chasing pack close the gap and they are only three points clear of the drop zone heading into the weekend.
