Info For Leeds Fans Heading To Newcastle

24 September 2013 12:27
Leeds United fans have been handed a travel warning ahead of the club's big Capital One Cup tie at Newcastle United on Wednesday.

DIRECTIONS:- At the end of the A1(M) continue on the A1 and then the A184 towards Newcastle. Continue along this road, bearing left onto the A189. Continue over the River Tyne on the Redheugh Bridge, from which the ground can be clearly seen. Carry on straight up the dual carriageway (St James Boulevard). This leads directly to the Gallowgate end of the ground. As the ground is so central there are a number of pay and display car parks in the vicinity.

An easier way into the City is to stay on the A1 until the exit for Westerhope. Leave the A1 go straight over two roundabouts and then follow the signs for the Royal Victoria Infirmary (Queen Victoria Road) - parking here is in a multi storey and allows a reasonably quick getaway after the game.

Northumbria Police say the transport network in Newcastle will be “extremely busy” during the build-up to the match, which is due to be attended by 6,000 Leeds supporters.

And the force wants away fans to take steps to stop possible delays on the roads and railways spoiling their night in the north east.

Northumbria Police’s match commander, Chief Supt Steve Neill, said: “We want to welcome supporters from both teams and we hope they enjoy their evening.

“Our role is to help supporters enjoy themselves and ensure that the match passes safely for everyone attending.

“There will be a large number of coaches carrying fans into the city and we will bring them in as quickly as possible – however, safety is always our priority and we are asking fans to be patient while police ensure that there is a safe path into the ground.

“The roads, Metros and trains in and around Newcastle are expected to be extremely busy during the afternoon and evening, so we are advising fans to plan their journeys in advance.

“Fans should also consider using organised coaches if possible.

“All supporters are urged to allow themselves extra time for their journeys so they are able to get to the match on time.”

Fans travelling by rail on Wednesday will be able to catch a train from Newcastle Central Station to Leeds at 9.56pm.

The next and final service bound for Leeds on the night will leave Newcastle at 10.59pm.

Up-to-the-minute information and advice about the game will be available via the police’s NorthumbriaNUFC Twitter account. The turnstiles at Newcastle’s St James’ Park ground will open at 6.15pm, with kick-off at 7.45pm.
