Hull set to hijack Newcastle's bid for Sheffield United defender Kilgallon

Newcastle's move for Matthew Kilgallon could be thwarted if Hull can agree a better deal for the player during next month's transfer window. [LNB]Newcastle had been favourites to sign Sheffield United's former England Under 21 centre back  but the Barclays Premier League club need reinforcements in that position. [LNB]Hull could offer cash plus players deemed surplus to requirements - including  one-time Sheffield United target Peter Halmosi - to out-do Newcastle's bid. [LNB] Target: Kilgallon (R) spent five seasons at Leeds before his move to the Blades [LNB] Bolton, Wigan and Burnley on alert after Blades cancel Kilgallon talksDerby 0 Sheff United 1: Kilgallon strike maintains Blades' impressive start Celtic make £4m bid for Sheffield United defender Matthew KilgallonManchester City 1 Hull City 1: Hughes is safe for now but this is no joke, City That deal would suit Sheffield United, rather than a pure cash offer, because there is a sell-on fee involved.  [LNB]Leeds, Kilgallon's former club, are entitled to 20 per cent of any fee he commands in excess of £1million. [LNB]Black and white: Coloccini's future at Newcastle remains unclear [LNB][LNB]He came through the Elland Road club's youth  system before making80 appearances and then switching in January 2007 to Sheffield United, where he has played more than 100 games. [LNB]Hungarian Halmosi was Hull's record signing at the time that hearrived, costing an estimated £2.5m from Plymouth in summer 2008, buthe has flopped in  the top flight. The winger was one of the stars of the Championship, though. [LNB]A moveto East Yorkshire would favour York-born Kilgallon, 25, too as hecould  expect regular first-team football. [LNB]Hull have been forced to use Kevin Kilbane as a makeshift centreback and regular central defender Kamil Zayatte has been error-prone,making two bad mistakes in last month's home win against Everton.[LNB] Newcastle already have a strong central defensive pairing -Fabrizio Coloccini  and Steven Taylor. However, doubts aboutColoccini's future prompted Newcastle  to target Kilgallon. [LNB]Hull would have no problems meeting the wage demands of Kilgallon, who has also  been out on loan at West Ham from Sheffield United.
