Hughton relief at deadline

Newcastle caretaker manager Chris Hughton admitted his relief after the transfer window shut without any more of his first-team squad exiting the club. The Magpies have already seen seven key players leave the club over the summer and Hughton was desperate to keep the bulk of his squad together so as not to disrupt their promising start to life in the Championship. Toon midfielder Kevin Nolan had attracted interest from former club Bolton while the likes of Steven Taylor, Nicky Butt and Joey Barton were all linked with moves away from St James' Park in recent weeks. However the stand-in boss managed to keep hold of his top stars as the transfer window shut and even added to his squad with the re-signing of Peter Lovenkrands. "For me the best news of the transfer window is that we didn't allow any more players to leave," Hughton told the club's official website. "We're delighted to have Peter back on board and we saw last season that he's a top class individual and a very good player who made a big impression during his time here. "I would've like to add a couple more but the most important thing was that nobody left. "We've got an excellent group of lads here at the moment who have had a terrific start to the season. "Our senior pros have been fantastic and below that we've got a good crop of youngsters who I won't be afraid to use when the time is right."
