Hughton pleased with display

ewcastle caretaker boss Chris Hughton was left to reflect on a good effort from his charges as they went down 1-0 to Bolton. The Magpies looked to be gaining a foothold in the game until Ricardo Gardner's opener just after the break dealt a significant blow to their chances. Despite the loss, Hughton maintained that there were plenty of positives to take from the encounter. "We gave a spirited performance and had better opportunities than Bolton," insisted absent manager Joe Kinnear's number two. "We just lacked a bit of guile and composure to break them down. The goal galvanised them a little bit but I felt we should have had something from the game." Newcastle could well have reason to feel hard done by after failing in a strong penalty appeal when Jlloyd Samuel threw his body at Fabricio Coloccini's close range effort. The ball clearly made contact with Samuel's hands but, with the two players so near to one another, referee Alan Wiley regarded the incident as ball to hand - much to Hughton's disappointment. He added: "I thought the lad's hands were out and it was one a lot of referees would have given."
