Hughton - No Taylor approaches

Newcastle caretaker boss Chris Hughton insists the club have not received any approaches for Steven Taylor. Aston Villa are reported to be interested in Taylor, while Everton are being linked with a move for the defender after agreeing to sell Joleon Lescott to Manchester City. But Hughton has denied any approach, adding he wants to keep the current squad together as he looks to mount a promotion charge from the Championship. He told Sky Sports News: "No (there has not been an approach for Taylor) and where we are at the moment is that we have a squad with us that will be involved in a squad for tomorrow night (in the Carling Cup against Huddersfield). "I'm very hopeful that come the end of the transfer window that that squad will remain the same and I'm quite sure if there's any change to that I will be made aware of that." Newcastle are currently sitting in third in the Championship despite having lost the likes of Sebastien Bassong and Michael Owen during this transfer window. Asked if he would be reluctant for any more of the squad to leave, Hughton replied: "Yes, I think the most important thing for us is come the end of the transfer window that we've got a squad that is good enough to compete at the right end of the table in this division. "We've started well, we have got a group of players that have been with us since pre-season, of course we have lost a few of them players and I would be absolutely delighted if we didn't lose any more."
