CHRIS HUGHTON is hoping to add Marlon Harewood to his strikeforce in time for Newcastle Uniteds trip to promotion rivals Cardiff City next weekend with centrehalf Craig Cathcart also poised to arrive on loan.[LNB] The Magpies boss, who is expected to be named Championship manager of the month for August, almost secured their signatures ahead of Mondays transfer deadline before both deals collapsed.[LNB] Aston Villa were keen to push through a permanent move for 30-year-old Harewood frontman but terms could not be agreed and he is now poised to join Newcastle on an initial three-month loan.[LNB] Harewood began his career at Nottingham Forest before moving to West Ham where he netted around once every three games. Last season Martin ONeill told the player that he was not part of his plans and he spent the final two months of the campaign on loan at Wolves.[LNB] His arrival on Tyneside would help alleviate Hughtons striker crisis after Shola Ameobi was sidelined with a stress fracture to his right foot while Andy Carroll has struggled to recover from a groin problem.[LNB] Peter Lovekrands return to St James Park on a threeyear contract offers Hughton another option in attack as he aims to extend Newcastles unbeaten start to the season.[LNB] Newcastle were also interested in Wolves forward Sam Vokes and Tottenham Hotspur and England U21 winger Danny Rose.[LNB] Cathcarts proposed £1.75m switch to Tyneside fell through earlier this week after the Northern Ireland U21 failed a medical. Newcastle proved unwilling to push through a permanent deal for the Belfast-born defender who suffered a serious knee injury two years ago but will give him a chance to prove his fitness on a short-term loan.[LNB] Hughton, meanwhile, will become the first Newcastle boss for six years to be named manager of the month if he is handed the award on Monday.[LNB] The Magpies top the Championship after an unbeaten start to the season and secured their place in the third round of the Carling Cup.[LNB] Sir Bobby Robson was the last Newcastle boss to be given the manager-of-the month award Recognition of Hughtons achievements in overseeing team affairs will add to pressure growing pressure for Mike Ashley to hand him the reins on a longterm basis.[LNB] Danny Guthrie, who hit Newcastles match-winning strike on Wednesday, said: Chris and Colin (Calderwood) have done wonders.[LNB] Its testament to the job theyve done that were top of the league and I think Chris deserves the manager- of-the-month award.[LNB]
