Hughton hails Williamson

Boss Chris Hughton has praised defender Mike Williamson for the way he has slotted into Newcastle's injury-ravaged back four. The 26-year-old transfer window signing from Portsmouth has started the last four games after not making a single senior appearance for Pompey during the first half of the campaign. Tuesday night's shock 3-0 Coca-Cola Championship reverse at Derby apart, the Magpies have defended resiliently during that period despite missing Steven Taylor, Fabricio Coloccini and Jose Enrique for much of it. Hughton said: "We have been delighted with Mike because he hasn't played too much football this season, certainly first-team football, on the back of a very good season at Watford last season. "To come in and play the games he has in a short period of time, he has done very well. "When we spoke to him about him coming, there was a general excitement about getting back into competitive football and the opportunity to come here and to start playing again was one that was a very, very exciting prospect for him."
