Hughes sad at Magpies' plight
Former Newcastle United defender Aaron Hughes has expressed his sadness at the club's Premier League predicament.
The Magpies will definitely be relegated from England's top flight on Sunday if they lose at Aston Villa following their weekend defeat at home to Fulham.
Part of that Cottagers team was former United stopper Hughes, who made over 200 Premier League appearances for the club between 1996 and 2005.
The Northern Ireland international believes Alan Shearer is the right man to lead the North East outfit away from the relegation trapdoor despite his indifferent record at the helm.
With so many managers passing through the St James' Park door in recent seasons, Hughes believes stability is vital to Newcastle and that Shearer should be there for the long term.
"It's very sad to see what's happened to Newcastle and where they are in the table," explained Hughes.
"But they've most definitely got the right man for the job in Alan Shearer. He brings them stature and stability.
"He knows the club backwards and, from what I've read, he's been able to solve a few problems there already.
"If they can stay up and if he gets the manager's job, then it would be a fantastic move. It would be nothing but a good thing for them.
"Everyone can see there has been no stability there and it's not always about what's happening on the pitch.
"The priority for us this season was to stay in the league but we've ended up doing a fair bit more than that and what's pleasing is the way we've done it."
