Champions League rejects are split into two.
Teams finishing third in the Champions League group stage, such as Benfica and Ajax, are given a second chance by entering the Europa League after Christmas.
The four best-ranked are lumped with the Europa League group winners, the rest with the second-placed teams.
The draw for the last 32 takes place on December 20.
Winning in France would have guarantee the Magpies a St James’ Park second leg in the knockouts, but nothing else.
They will also be kept away from Bordeaux, but if they reach the last 16, anything goes.
The draw for the last 16 is made straight after the one for the previous round.
The two-legged last-32 games are in February, with the next round just a fortnight later.
