How Long Will Hughton Stick With Perch?

27 September 2010 12:37
James Perch has done nothing in pre-season or in the Premiership to win over the Newcastle fans, and now the pressure is on Chris Hughton to stand up and be counted over his summer signing. Perch scored the own goal that gifted Stoke the points on Sunday, but it is the previous five games - in which he was booked in EVERY game - that this article is based on. The former Nottingham Forest defender had a horror pre-season when he never put a foot right, but obviously he needs time to settle. After all, £10.3m signing from Deportivo La Coruña Fabricio Coloccini and £6m signing Jose Enrique failed to adapt to the Premiership in their first season - and I mean the FULL season! But this is a very important season for Newcastle United FC and do we have to sit and watch a player struggle - costing us points - just because the manager has to justify his signing. Perch was suspended after five games, and he announced "I won't change my game", but his "game" is one of kicking a player rather than out-witting him. Look back at those bookings. Each and every one was for a tackle on the edge of the Newcastle box, because Perch waded in because he didn't know how to handle his opponent and shepherd him away to the flanks. He is an attacking-full back who models his game off Ashley Cole. But Cole - first and foremost - can DEFEND! I have given Perch so much stick on this website I watched him for every second of Sunday's game to try and find something in his game to praise. But the opening minutes of the fixture with Stoke - his first two passes were to Stoke players - he tried a cross that ended up over-shooting everyone in the penalty area - and he took a throw-in and threw it to a Stoke player! But, to his credit, he had two digs at goal in the second-half in a match that Newcastle were goal-shy throughout. At least he wasn't afraid to chance his luck. Then came the own goal, which doesn't take much describing. He went to head the ball before Robert Huth got there, without having a clue where he was going to put it. As it happens ... it could have gone for a corner ... but the back of the net got in the way! I honestly want him to do well - as we ALL do - but doesn't Ryan Taylor give us better options?
