HATCHET MAN: Owen has eight games to become a Magpies legend - and he owes them that after failing t

Michael Owen has been given a golden chance to earn a reprieve at Newcastle. After taking a fantastic salary for a pretty meagre return over nearly four years he could become a hero. The striker has looked anything but as he has graced the treatment room almost as often as the St James' Park pitch and he seemed set to leave the club on a low in the summer. More lows than highs: Michael Owen's time at Newcastle has been frustrating But the return of Alan Shearer has given him a chance to change everything. If Owen scores the goals which keep Newcastle up he will be an unlikely Toon hero. It is what the fans have wanted from the day he signed to such acclaim from Real Madrid but Owen so obviously failed to deliver. Shearer will put his faith in him and forget everything that went before. Not many players get that sort of second chance after running their contract down and preparing to go off in search of another whopping pay day. Owen owes Newcastle and their fans and now he will get a chance to deliver and prove he is nobody's has-been.
