HATCHET MAN: Just what Sunderland need to make them a North-East force: Newcastle fanatic Steve Bru

Niall Quinn says Sunderland need a big name manager to carry them forward and then appears to go for Steve Bruce. The Wigan boss is big alright, but he is no stellar signature. Paying to prise him from Wigan, if it comes to that, would be a mistake. Bruce is a decent manager but the former Sheffield United, Huddersfield, Wigan (first stint), Crystal Palace and Birmingham boss doesn't hang around for long enough to develop a club who now have the responsibility of being the North-East's biggest. And how much more than five minutes (if that) will the fans give a Geordie who grew up supporting bitter rivals Newcastle?
