HATCHET MAN: Is Shearer Wise to replace toilet paper-buying Dennis with bog standard failure Dowie?

Good riddance to Dennis Wise, a man who will be remembered by Newcastle fans for buying bogroll when the proverbial was hitting the fan. His presence was deeply divisive and the transfer policy he oversaw at the club will be a problem for some time yet. If Alan Shearer cannot save them from relegation, his input could turn out to be catastrophic - leaving the club with players on decent money that no-one else wants. He's got balls...but things turn ugly too often when Iain Dowie is left in charge But at least the latest interim manager is showing a gambler's side to his nature that he had kept well hidden. As he sat comfortably on the Match of the Day couch he regularly refused to have an opinion one way or another. On his return to Newcastle he is rolling the dice, not by the popular move to jettison Wise, but by appointing Iain Dowie as his assistant. Maybe Shearer needs some managerial experience alongside him, a guy with all the relevant qualifications to shout and scream from the touchline. Yet why go for someone who become as lacklustre as Dowie has become in recent years? Despite taking Crystal Palace up to the Premier League briefly, the former West Ham striker has been run out of every job since. It was his rein which started the rot at freefalling Charlton, at Coventry he failed to achieve promotion and his spell at QPR was also cut short without success. The word in football circles is that he is not good at dealing with chairmen or power brokers who want to know what is going on - so he should not be allowed to deal with Newcastle owner Mike Ashley. Presumably he will be better with his mate Shearer, but there are no guarantees and the Newcastle legend may have to cash in some of his popularity chips early to get the players to buy Dowie's slightly offbeat coaching style. After Wise's exit, Dowie will have to share some of the intense St James' Park spotlight and if he doesn't fit in it could all get rather ugly.
