HATCHET MAN: Another fine mess as Laurel & Hardy - sorry, Shearer & Dowie - drill the Keys

Alan Shearer has only been the Newcastle manager for one game but already the club are having to fight off claims he is just there as a figurehead. Managing director insisted: 'Alan has got Iain Dowie with him and that's a good balance, but Alan is making the decisions. 'Iain is assisting on the football side of it and the energy within the training camp. I'm really encouraged by it all.' It is a good thing somebody is. One match, one defeat, a training session in which Shearer plays and a completely unfathomable job description for his right-hand man, the experienced manager in the partnership. Life at Newcastle is clear as mud - as usual.
