Has Santon A Heart Bigger Than Pistone's?

Back in 1997 we signed an Italian full-back called Allesandro Pistone, who was a superb defender on his day, but his day was never often enough.

He was always injured, and only made 60 appearances in four years. following his £4.3m move from Inter Milan.

We sold him to Everton and he was immediately injured and out for 6 months!

The Newcastle players handed him a sheep's heart for a Christmas present ... because of his lack of heart.

We bought Davide Santon from Inter Milan, in a similar deal, and so far he has only played two reserve games, following injury.

Jose Mourinho said Santon was good enough to play for the Italian national team, but his temperament was "suspect" and he sent the defender out on loan.

So all eyes are on him, following his reserve outing at Swansea last night, hoping he is the finished article and ready for the tough life in the Premiership.

He has admitted he is ready to fight for his first-team place at Newcastle United and is set for the bench at Wolves on Saturday.

The Italian Under-21 star arrived from Inter Milan in a £5.3m deal in August, but has been forced to watch from the touchlines as the Magpies maintained their unbeaten start to the season.

Davide Santon: “I will give everything on the pitch and show that I am a good player.

“There are already good players here and I must show what I have first.

“But I am happy about the challenge that lies ahead for me.

“I want to show my character and be a great player for Newcastle.

“I can play on the right or the left.

“Obviously, I am a defender, but I enjoy going forward!

“In time I want to be settled here.

“But I can enjoy life here at Newcastle and I am looking forward to playing in front of a packed house at St James’ Park as soon as I can.”
