Harper The New John Burridge

Steve Harper moved on to Hull City aged 38 and he is set to start a new career in the Premier League.

Hull goalkeeper Allan McGregor has been ruled out for up to six weeks with a thigh injury, and that can only be great news for Harper.

Steve Bruce: “We’ve just found out this morning that Allan is going to be out for five or six weeks.

“This is the reason we brought Steve in, to be fair.

“He’s got an abundance of Premier League experience, and we’re lucky that we can call upon somebody with his experience.”

Harper, brought in over the summer after his contract at Newcastle expired, will deputise, starting in this weekend’s trip to Tottenham.

He left Newcastle aged 38, and going back to 1989, John Burridge arrived on Tyneside aged 39.

Harper made 148 starts in 14 seasons at Newcastle, while Burridge made 80 starts in two seasons.

Budgie was a huge favourite at the club, despite arriving when he was almost 40.

A goalkeeper who played to the gallery, he regarded himself as the best in the country, and to be honest he wasn't far wrong.

He left under controversial circumstances because manager Ossie Ardiles was told to sell all of the 'big earners' and he went to Hibs and won a League Cup winners medal.

After that he returned to the Premier League with Manchester City, and such was his love for Newcastle he wouldn't sit on the City bench when they came to play at St James' Park - sat next to the Leazes End!

In his time he played for: Workington, Blackpool, Aston Villa, Southend, Crystal Palace, QPR, Wolves, Derby, Sheff Utd, Southampton, Newcastle, Hibs, Scarborough, Lincoln, Aberdeen, Dumbarton, Falkirk, Man City, Darlington and Queen of the South.
