Harper Concerned About Size Of Pardew's Squad

Steve Harper handed over £327,000 to the Sir Bobby Robson Foundation, following his testimonial.

Talking about Newcastle's season so far, he once again suggested (as he did after his Testimonial) that Mike Ashley should have backed Alan Pardew in the summer transfer window.

Pardew has a full strength squad available to him at present, but come the winter months when those foreigners who like the sun on their back drop away ... what then?

Harper suggests a bout of injuries would hit Pardew hard.

Steve Harper: “It’s been an up-and-down season so far for Newcastle.

“They’ve played well here and there, had some fantastic results and one or two disappointing ones.

“We all know how good Newcastle can be, it’s just unlocking that consistency, because they’ll need it going into the run of fixtures ahead.

“Thankfully, after a good win at Cardiff, they’ll be full of confidence.

“It’s always difficult to win any away game in the Premier League, and they’ve managed to do that.

“They took the second half from Everton into the Cardiff game and got an excellent result down there, which I’m sure everyone at the football club needed.

“It meant they could go into the international break with a great deal of confidence, going into some very tough fixtures. I know it’s Liverpool and Sunderland coming up.

“Hopefully the internationals come back injury-free, because they’re important.

“I think the big thing at the minute is that they’ve, basically, pretty much got the full squad available.

“We all know how good they are, one to 11, and how good a team they have got.

“They had that a couple of years ago, and if they can keep that first choice 11 or 12 players involved week in, week out then they’ll have a very good season.

“It’s only, obviously, if injuries come along that it’ll be difficult for them."
