Gosling Was Always Going To Be A Gamble

Dan Gosling was finally handed a league start at Carrow Road on Saturday almost a year and a half into his career at the club.

But the 21-year-old was shown a straight red card with 25 minutes left, and his team trailing 3-1, for a late challenge on Russell Martin.

He will have to serve a three-game ban for the challenge, with his enforced absence another headache to injury-hit manager Alan Pardew.

But the former Everton player was suffering from a serious injury when he signed for Newcastle, and there was never a guarantee he would fully recover.

While Pardew felt there was no malice in the tackle, he knew what was coming from referee Martin Atkinson.

Alan Pardew: “I just felt Dan was late – I don’t think he intended to hurt the player.

“It wasn’t a particularly hard tackle, it was just late. The crowd reacted, and all of their players reacted. He was going to go.

“We’re having a tough run in terms of injuries and suspensions.

“This is what the Premier League’s about – it tests you. You’re not going to have it smooth all year, and maybe this is our rough patch.”
