Geordie Revenge For '96?

How often are reminded of Kevin Keegan's rant at Elland Road back in 1996 ... "I'd LOVE it if we beat them"?

At the end of the day ... or end of the season ... we didn't.

The Mancs mocked KK and they (and Sky TV showing the clip over and over again) have done so ever since.

They went on to more titles, while we never got a sniff.

But perhaps KK will be laughing this week - not because of Newcastle's defeat to Man City - but because Newcastle Utd put a major dent in Sir Alex's title challenge.

City took six point off us - but we took four points of United - and that's a stat worth remembering.

I was at St James' when City last took the title on the last day of the season in 1968.

We lost 4-3 despite goals from John McNamee, Pop Robson and Jackie Sinclair, and there were amazing scenes that day.

Manchester City have one hand on the Premier League trophy after Yaya Toure's double fired them to a 2-0 success at the same venue as 1968.

Having climbed to the top of the table with Monday's derby victory over Manchester United, Roberto Mancini's men remain top on goal difference after the Red Devils defeated Swansea 2-0 later on Sunday.

That means City lead by eight goals at the summit ahead of the final day of the season.

City now know that they will celebrate their Premiership title if they can overcome relegation-threatened Queens Park Rangers, and former manager Mark Hughes, at the Etihad Stadium next weekend.

Mancini's players celebrated just as lustily as their fans high in the stand behind Krul's goal after the final whistle with the promise of glory tantalisingly close.

United kept the title race going to to the final day of the season with victory over Swansea, but they failed to find the glut of goals they needed to turn up the heat on City.

The title will therefore be decided on the final day of the season as United remain level on points with their Manchester rivals ahead of their journey to Sunderland.
