Gazza On The Facts Of Life ... And Wayne Rooney

Professional piss-head, fishing rod specialist and 'police go-between', Paul Gascoigne expects Wayne Rooney to receive plenty more red cards during his career.

Paul Gascoigne: "What has he done wrong? I mean okay, he got sent off but it won't be his first time and it's not going be his last time.

"It won't be long before he's captain. He'll have to go to the Euros without a shadow of a doubt and I don't think anyone in the country has a problem with that.

"Capello can't get inside his head? Why do you want to get inside his head?

"I remember Walter Smith, he came in once and he grabbed me by the throat and I said, 'What's the matter with you?' And he said, 'I've been to see a psychiatrist and he said there's nothing I can do with you but just leave you as you are.' And it's true.

"England don't express themselves from the couple of games I've seen. I can't understand why the midfield players don't run at the other midfielders. Take a little gamble, take a chance.

"But I don't know what Capello's said in the dressing room - has he given the freedom that Terry Venables gave me? Or Walter Smith? You know, they gave me the freedom to play. I don't know if they're self-disciplined or by what he's saying in the dressing room.

"Capello's record has been fantastic - it's just when you see the big games we freeze. If they're 2-1 up, that game should be dead and buried. Just run the ball down, waste time, keep possession.

"The foreigners are brilliant at doing it and we're still not learning from the bad mistakes we've made in the past."
