Newcastle put their off-field problems to one side as they thrashed League Two Darlington 7-2 at the Northern Echo Darlington Arena. Damien Duff, Kevin Nolan, Jonas Gutierrez, Steven Taylor, Andy Carroll and two goals from Shola Ameobi eased the Magpies to victory, with Dean Windass responding with a brace for the home side. There was one worry for the Magpies, with experienced midfielder Nicky Butt departing early through injury. Sebastien Bassong was conspicuous by his absence, and just how many of the players on duty are still at St James' Park when the new Championship season kicks off in three weeks' time remains to be seen. The 3,445 visiting supporters among a crowd of 6,698 made their feelings about managerial-hopeful Alan Shearer and want-away owner Mike Ashley abundantly clear in front of managing director Derek Llambias. Derby slumped to a 2-1 loss at Chesterfield, Plymouth won 2-0 at Skelmersdale, Preston were 2-1 winners at Tranmere while Swansea triumphed 3-1 against Steve McClaren's FC Twente at the Liberty Stadium. Nathan Tyson hit a hat-trick as Nottingham Forest hammered Football League newcomers Burton 4-1, while Lewis Guy and Robbie Clark fired Doncaster to a 2-0 win at Barrow. Reading suffered a 2-1 loss at the hands of non-league Kettering, Bristol City drew 1-1 with Cheltenham while Leon Best and Freddy Eastwood hit the goals as Coventry won 2-0 at Hinckley. Aldershot drew 0-0 with Brentford, Ayr lost 1-0 against St Mirren, Bury and Oldham played out a goalless stalemate, Southend defeated Chelmsford, Corby triumphed 2-1 over Northampton and Hibernian beat Dunfermline 4-0. Leeds United were 3-1 victors over Glentoran, Watford beat Wealdstone 3-0, Halifax lost 3-1 against Accrington Stanley, Hinckley Utd went down 2-0 versus Coventry, Mangotsfield were beaten 3-0 by Dagenham & Redbridge, while Huddersfield won against Morecambe by the same scoreline. Port Vale brushed Newcastle Town aside 3-0, Stockport smashed Nostell Miners Welfare 5-0, Rotherham lost 2-1 against Walsall, Stirling Albion lost 2-1 versus Dundee United, Torquay lost 4-1 against Bristol Rovers, Gillingham suffered a surprised 2-0 loss at Welling , West Brom drew 2-2 against Varteks, while Bradford beat York 2-0.
