French Kid Stars For Toon

Newcastle Utd's second string ran out 2-1 winners against Scottish League minnows Berwick Rangers, in a game the Rangers fans told us was called off. Report from Denis Taylor: It was 'touch and go' whether we stayed in the pub and spent the afternoon on the lash ... but luckily we got a call from a Toon fan saying it would go ahead. I'm sure many locals were put off on a rain lashed day, but the attendance of 493 was probably as good as Berwick get for an average league game. The Scottish Third Division outfit battled hard but goals from French kid Yven Moyo and Dubliner Brandon Miele gave the Magpies a 2-1 win. United fielded first team fringe playersPhil Airey, Greg McDermott and Brad Inman as they warmed up for next week's trip to Holland. Berwick probably got more out of the game than Newcastle because they were running the rule over nine trialists in their squad, and they proved to be a tough side to break down. Yven Moyo, easily the best player on the pitch, scored five minutes before the break to open the score. The ex-Sochaux winger Moyo found space on the edge of the box before slamming a right footed strike past David Crawford. On 71 minutes sub Brandon Miele hit a shot from outside the box which took a deflection off a Berwick defender to wrong foot the goalkeeper to make it 2-0. Three minutes later Patrick Nzuzi (the only Toon outfield player to play 90 minutes) pushed Fraser McClaren to hand the home side a penalty. McClaren sent goalkeeper Ole Soderberg the wrong way. NEWCASTLE UTD RESERVES: Soderberg, Nicholson (McGorrigan 69), Toland (Storey 63), McDermott (Aird 63), Turton (Sayer 63), Nzuzi, Moyo (Knight 69), Inman (Campbell 69), Airey (D Taylor 46), Newton (Miele 58), Edmundsson (Ions 69).
