Former Newcastle keeper Tommy Wright insists the Magpies must rebuild to survive in the Premier League. It happened in 1993 and he says it must happen now. The last time United were promoted in 1993, they finishing third in the top flight ahead of Liverpool, Arsenal and Chelsea ... because the rebuilt. Tommy Wright: “It’s totally different to then, the team was quickly changed around in a season or so and the players who took the team up moved on – it was almost a total rebuild. “I was with the club when it entered the Premier League and played a few games but then I was sold, David Kelly had gone, Liam O’Brien went and Brian Kilcline. “The place changed as a club pretty quickly. “It’s up to the chairman to make the funds available to do that. “As well as the team did last season, it’s still the basis of the team that went down. “I’m sure they will all have a point or two to prove to people, but nevertheless when you come up there must be some investment. “I think most managers would, if they are honest, admit that if they were offered better players to the ones they had, they would take them. “You maintain the squad but you also strengthen it too. “That lifts the fans in the summer and it also increased the competition for places which you do need in the Premier League."
