Former Newcastle United chief executive Freddie Fletcher has died at the age of 71.

I met the man many times and he will forever be credited with changing the fortunes of the club during the early 1990s and appointing manager Kevin Keegan.

Before he arrived at St James’s Park, Mr Fletcher was commercial director of Scottish giants Glasgow Rangers.

He died last night from asbestos-related cancer mesothelioma, which he was diagnosed with in January.

Former United chairman Sir John Hall: “He was instrumental to the success of Newcastle United.

“It’s sad to think we have lost a truly great friend.

“What he did behind the scenes was invaluable. My condolences go to his wife Margaret and family.”
