Former Toon Defender Hits Out At Scotland's Boo-Boys!

Former Newcastle defender Gary Caldwell has hit back at Scotland's critics and urged them not to derail the team's World Cup qualifying campaign.

The Chilly Jockos followed up a goalless stalemate against Serbia in their Group A opener, with a 1-1 draw against Macedonia on Tuesday, with supporters jeering the side off and booing manager Craig Levein on several occasions.

Gary Caldwell: "The negativity which surrounds this group - whatever it is, whatever agenda people may have against the manager or the players - it has to change.

"We need everyone - and that's the whole country - to get behind this team because it's difficult to qualify. We need the positivity to come back.

"The application and attitude of every single player - those who started and the ones who came off the bench - was total. We gave it everything we had.

"We just weren't good enough again on the night - the final pass, putting the ball in the net, creating something.

"We're bitterly disappointed that we haven't managed to win the game. But we're still in this - we all believe that - and we just need everyone else to believe that.

"We have to stick together and stay strong as a group - we don't want to use negativity as a motivation."
