Ferguson And Rooney - Shepherd Talks With Forked Tongue!
Former chairman Freddie Shepherd has claimed he tried to replace Kevin Keegan with Sir Alex Ferguson and was so close to signing Wayne Rooney. What if? Freddie Shepherd: “We went for Sir Alex Ferguson, at the time he was negotiating a new contract at Man United and we spoke to Fergie’s advisers but it didn’t come off. “His advisers encouraged us to wait a bit longer and further down the line it just died a death. “It would have been a great signing after Keegan, he’s always said that the only other club he’d come to is Newcastle. “Unfortunately we nearly had a deal done for Rooney when he was leaving Everton. I went to see Bill Kenwright and had the cheque there and was ready to do the deal but when I got back the board decided to dispense with Bobby (Robson), so the whole deal fell though. “I had the money ready for the deal, we were that close. How could we continue with the deal when we were looking for a new manager? “The new boss might not have wanted Rooney, but Bobby did want Rooney. If Bobby had stayed we would have got him 100%, without a doubt. “Man United had admitted they weren’t going to buy anybody until the summer and that’s well documented. We got in there and tried to buy him, it was that close for him to come to Newcastle.” It is interesting to note that Shepherd distances himself from the Robson sacking - "when I got back the board decided to dispense with Bobby" - which is NOT the story we heard, and certainly NOT the story in Sir Bobby's book.
