Fenerbahce 1 Toon 1

Fenerbahce made an offer to try and take Demba Ba to Turkey this month. They got a good look at him last night.

United's pre-season preparations continued with a draw in Austria.

Newcastle had to settle for a 1-1 draw with the Turkish giants on Saturday night as Mehdi Abeid's opener was cancelled out in the last minute.  The Magpies produced an impressive performance and it looked like they would emerge victorious until Christian Baroni struck for the Turkish side just before the final whistle.

Fenerbahce carved out several chances to open the scoring, with former Liverpool man Dirk Kuyt among those going close with a volley that hit the side-netting.

Newcastle still posed an attacking threat of their own, with the fit-again Sylvain Marveaux catching the eye before being substituted.

The deadlock was finally broken in the 76th minute when Abeid collected the ball from Gael Bigirimana, held off a defender and slotted home.

Shola Ameobi and Papiss Cisse had chances to extend Newcastle's lead before Baroni's first-time effort beat Rob Elliot and flew into the bottom corner.

Fabricio Coloccini and Papiss Cisse both made their first appearances of the pre-season programme.

There was little to choose between the two sides in an uneventful first half, although Dan Gosling should perhaps have done better with a header that looped over the crossbar.

Ryan Taylor went close with a long-range free-kick at the start of the second half, and Newcastle claimed a 76th-minute lead through substitute Mehdi Abeid.

The midfielder had only been on the pitch for a little over a minute when he received a pass from Sammy Ameobi and turned adroitly in the area before slotting past Fenerbahce goalkeeper Mert Gunok.

Both Ameobi brothers - Shola and Sammy - wasted decent opportunties to extend Newcastle's lead, and Fenerbahce grabbed a stoppage-time equaliser.

Elliot, Simpson (Santon 68), Tavernier, Coloccini, R Taylor, Tiote (Bigirimana 59), Gosling (Abeid 73), Obertan (Shola Ameobi 75), Marveuax (Gutierrez 59), Vuckic (Sammy Ameobi 46), Ba (Cisse 68).
