FA reject Toon's Zurab appeal

Newcastle have failed in their bid to have Zurab Khizanishvili's red card against Doncaster rescinded by the Football Association, the club have confirmed on their official website. The 28-year-old, who is on-loan from Blackburn Rovers, was sent off by referee Darren Deadman five minutes from time in Saturday's 2-1 win over Doncaster as tempers boiled over. Khizanishvili clashed with Rovers striker Billy Sharp in the melee, prompting the straight red, which automatically warranted the defender a three-match ban. Newcastle caretaker boss Chris Hughton launched an appeal against the decision after reviewing the scene in which he thought the Georgian was trying to restore order. However, the FA viewed matters differently and Khizanishvili must serve the three-match ban, meaning he will miss upcoming fixtures against Sheffield United, Peterborough and Preston.
