Enrique wants halt to Tyneside exodus

Defender Jose Enrique has urged Newcastle not to sell anymore players if they are to stand a chance of jumping straight back into the Barclays Premier League. Midfielder Damien Duff is set to join the exodus from St James' Park after holding talks with Fulham over the weekend and follow Michael Owen, Mark Viduka, Obafemi Martins, Sebastien Bassong, Habib Beye, Claudio Cacapa and David Edgar out of the exit door. Those departures have slashed a £74million annual wage bill by around £26million with owner Mike Ashley having clawed back sizeable fees for Martins, Bassong and Beye and awaiting another £4million when the Duff deal is finalised. However, with the closure of the transfer window fast approaching and the club still up for sale for another few days at least, Ashley is facing a major decision over whether to accept what is currently on the table or carry on at the helm for another season. To date, only Manchester United defender Danny Simpson has arrived on loan until January and although Portsmouth defender Sol Campbell has indicated he could be willing to make the move north, Enrique is calling for a little stability. He said: "Some players may leave again. It's not my problem, it's a problem for the club. I will concentrate on the team. But we need players because too many important players have left. There are some good players but only 13 or 14. We have good players and we can go back to the Premier League. But I think we need more players here. If we do that, we will be back up in the Premier League."
