Rory Hutton has been named in Edinburgh's 26-man squad for Friday's pre-season friendly against Newcastle Falcons at Kingston Park. The 22-year-old stand-off could start as both Phil Godman (thigh) and David Blair (shoulder) are unavailable, while club captain Simon Cross is expected to be out for several months with a knee injury. Head coach Rob Moffat said: "It is a really good opportunity for Rory to show what he can do at this level." He added: "He is a National Academy player, but he has already got some experience and now he will be given a chance." Edinburgh lost 33-16 to Harlequins last week at Myreside but Moffat believes the experience will stand his players in good stead ahead of the opening match of the Magners League season at Cardiff on September 4. And he expects the game with Newcastle to be another physically demanding test against quality Guinness Premiership opposition. "This will be ideal preparation for us because Cardiff are also a very physical side. "We will look to improve upon the areas of our game which were not up to scratch last week, although I thought there were a lot of positives to take from the Harlequins match." Cross, 28, came on as a replacement against Quins but damaged his knee and is expected to miss the opening stages of the season. Full-back Chris Paterson will also miss the game at Newcastle after taking a knock to his hip against Harlequins.
