Desperate Newcastle boss Shearer puts his faith in Bassong card appeal

Desperate Newcastle boss Alan Shearer has appealed against Sebastien Bassong's dismissal on Saturday in a last-gasp bid to have the club's player of the season available for Sunday's final-day showdown at Aston Villa. Shearer, who will meet with owner Mike Ashley next Tuesday after Newcastle know their fate to decide how to proceed, has studied Bassong's foul on Diomansy Kamara in Saturday's 1-0 home defeat by Fulham and will contest referee Howard Webb's decision. Bassong was sent off for tripping Kamara, but Newcastle feel the French defender did not prevent a scoring opportunity and that the Fulham striker did not have full control of the ball.
