Newcastle midfielder Jonas Gutierrez has paid tribute to the form of team-mate Fabricio Coloccini, who he believes may be the club`s best player so far this season.
Coloccini, who arrived at St James' Park from Deportivo La Coruna in 2008, has impressed at the back this term and on Saturday netted his second goal of the campaign in Newcastle's 1-1 draw with Tottenham.
His fellow Argentinian Gutierrez feels the defender has been a stand-out performer.
"I know Colo very well and he is having a really good season," Gutierrez told the Evening Chronicle. "The defence in the last few games has been really strong. That is really good for the team, but for him he has certainly been one of the best players of the season - if not the best."
He added: "It is not a surprise to me just how well he's doing. I know how he played when he was in Spain and he was one of the best defenders in La Liga.
"People in Spain know how he can play. But for me, it is normal to see him play like this. He has played like this for most of his life. He hardly missed a game for Deportivo La Coruna, he played the full season and in every minute. If you saw him play then you would see similarities to now."
