NEWCASTLE have confirmed that Alan Thompson has left the club by mutual consent.[LNB] Thompson, who worked as academy coach during the 2008-09 season and as reserve team coach last season, has been heavily linked with a role at former club Celtic in recent days.[LNB] A statement issued by the Magpies said: Newcastle United can confirm that Alan Thompson has left his role with the club by mutual consent.[LNB] Alan served Newcastle United exceptionally well as academy coach during the 2008-09 season, and as reserve team coach last season.[LNB] The club would like to thank Alan for his commitment to player development and coaching during his time at Newcastle and wish him every success.'' Manager Chris Hughton is currently on holiday and the club are likely to wait until his return to appoint a replacement, with former Sunderland defender and Hartlepool manager Martin Scott, Bobby Robson's one-time number two John Carver and Steve Stone among those to have been mentioned in despatches.[LNB]
