Chris Hughton: Were Newcastle right to sack him?

07 December 2010 00:33
And so here we are again. What have Newcastle fans done to deserve this?[LNB]The club that has kept us entertained for decades now, and so often for the wrong reasons, are again in the spotlight following the sacking of Chris Hughton.[LNB]Across the Geordie nation and beyond, football folk will be surely be shaking their heads and wondering what on earth Hughton has done to deserve this.[LNB] Wasn't he doing quite well? But Newcastle have sacked Chris Hughton[LNB] [LNB]After years of turbulence at StJames' Park, which culminated in relegation from the top flight in 2009, Newcastle seemed to stumble upon just the man they needed in Hughton.[LNB]He calmly guided Newcastle back to the promised land of the Premier League at the first time of asking, and they have had some fine results so far this term.[LNB]Sixgoals against Aston Villa, a marvellous win at Arsenal, and of coursethat thumping derby win over great rivals Sunderland that will betalked about in the north-east for years to come.[LNB]They are currently in 11th place a couple of weeks before Christmas - hardly reason to panic, you would think.[LNB] Derby joy: Kevin Nolan scores during Newcastle in October's thumping win over Sunderland[LNB]Afteryears of the big names failing - the likes of Kenny Dalglish, RuudGullit and Sam Allardyce, here was somebody that seemed to be popularwith players and fans alike, and was getting results on the pitch.[LNB]Butit's clearly not enough. Not for chairman and owner Mike Ashley anyway. The board have expressed the wish for a more experienced boss, this less than two years after appointing Alan Shearer.[LNB] Happy days: Hughton celebrates with his players after winning the Championship last season[LNB]But maybe you think the club have apoint. Recent results, apart from the draw against Chelsea, have beendisappointing - and the Magpies were so ordinary at West Bromwich onSunday that Hughton kept his players in the dressing room for an hourafter the game.[LNB]This will still be a long, hard season, and the table is so tight this season that a few more bad results could see Newcastle slip back down towards the danger zone.[LNB]When winter really starts to bite, does there need to be a moreexperienced hand on the tiller?[LNB] Poisoned chalice? Mike Ashley shakes Chris Hughton's hand last year, but the Newcastle boss has now been sacked[LNB] Whatever your opinion, Hughton has now left the club. So who do you think should follow him into the Newcastle hot seat?[LNB]Surely the best candidate? Former Aston Villa boss Martin O'Neill[LNB]Martin O'Neill would surely be the best qualified candidate. The Northern Irishman has done wonders at every club he's been at.[LNB]If not, what about Alan Curbishley? He's never let anybody down, has he? Or Alan Pardew? [LNB]They may all be fine operators, but would any of them really want the job?[LNB]Yes, it remains a big old club, and winning a trophy would surely guarantee any newman the freedom of Newcastle.[LNB]And the town is marvellous too. I find there are few finer pleasures in British lifethan spending time there with some of the warmest, kindestpeople you will ever meet.[LNB]Butis the job simply a poisoned chalice? Would working with Ashley, andhis seemingly huge expectations, be a burden that any of the interestedparties really needs?[LNB]We know you will have plenty of thoughts. Feel free to have your say, and we will publish the best of your comments.[LNB]DO YOU THINK HUGHTON SHOULD HAVE BEEN SACKED BY NEWCASTLE?
