Cavalier Or Defence-Minded Debuchy Against Reading?

Mathieu Debuchy will make his St James's Park debut on Saturday.

Alan Pardew told the attack-minded right-back to concentrate on the defensive side of his game at Carrow Road, but the 27-year-old will be given more freedom when he makes his home bow against Reading on Saturday.

Alan Pardew: “He’s very good offensively, but we restricted his movement because it was his first game.

“He’ll grow into that role. He’ll grow into the jersey. He’ll have a nice bit of momentum to take into Reading.

“Our away fans roared him on after seeing him at last, and now our home fans will get the chance to do the same.

“You are going to see more quality from Debuchy in home games, particularly.

“In his first 10 minutes he was a little bit starry-eyed, but then he settled down.

“You could see that we have worked on the back four.

“We had three sessions on it, and it showed. We were a lot more organised and a lot more disciplined. Davide Santon was excellent, and so was Colo (Fabricio Coloccini).

“We had some good performances there. Offensively, they made it very difficult for us.

“We didn’t have a Plan B because I couldn’t mix it up, because we need more strikers.

“Chris (Hughton) had that luxury of (Grant) Holt on the bench, and it nearly changed it. That’s the level we’re at.”
