Carroll Under Fire For His 'Spanish Archer' (El Bow)

14 February 2010 11:54
Andy Carroll was a lone soldier in Chris Hughton's bizarre formation at Swansea, but he snatched the one chance he had to sent Newcastle back to the summit. SWANSEA: De Vries, Williams, Tate, Monk, Bessone (Rangel 7), Pratley, Orlandi, Dyer (Butler 80), Cotterill, Allen, Kuqi (Pintado 74). Subs Not Used: Cornell, Trundle, Gower, Richards. NEWCASTLE: Harper, Coloccini, Hall, Simpson, Van Aanholt, Guthrie, Nolan, Routledge, Smith, Lovenkrands (Best 66), Carroll. Subs Not Used: Krul, Williamson, Ryan Taylor, Pancrate, Kadar, Ranger. Carroll may have battle alone with very little service from his shell-shocked team-mates, but he emerged as the Newcastle goal hero, despite Swansea officials questioning why he was still on the pitch to do so. The England-Under 21 striker was fortunate to escape with just a booking from referee Andy Woolmer after appearing to elbow Garry Monk in the 81st minute. And just five minutes later, he rubbed salt into the wounds by cancelling out David Cotterill’s opener to rescue a point. Swans boss Paulo Sousa was in no doubt over the decision, and said: “I think it was a sending off. It was an elbow and I’ve seen the video of the incident. “I wouldn’t call for it to happen, but we didn’t agree with the referee’s decision at the time. We can’t do much about it now. I’m only angry though as we should have won the game rather than blame the referee.”
