Carroll out to impress

Andy Carroll is hoping to play a bigger role for Newcastle as he prepares for his first full season as a member of the first team. The striker was given his chance by Joe Kinnear last season, and with the exit of Michael Owen and seemingly impending departure of Obafemi Martins, Carroll feels he is ready to make a bigger contribution. He told the Chronicle: "I was in the reserve-team dressing room at the start last season. I think I came up to the first-team dressing room halfway through the season. "Obviously it's good to be starting the season in the first-team dressing room - it's what I want. "I just need to start playing regularly and I'll be even happier. I'm ready for the responsibility. I know where I stand now. "I just need to do as well as I can, really, and push for a place."
