Carroll concern for Hughton

Newcastle boss Chris Hughton is keeping his fingers crossed over striker Andy Carroll after he reported for England duty with a groin injury. The 21-year-old headed off from Tyneside after Saturday night's 0-0 Barclays Premier League draw with Fulham under orders to come back fit but already carrying a minor problem. Carroll is being assessed by the England medics but whether he makes Wednesday's friendly against France or not, Hughton will be more concerned about his club's trip to Bolton on Saturday. Carroll has seven goals to his name already this season, including winners at West Ham and Arsenal and a hat-trick against Aston Villa, and with Shola Ameobi having missed out at the weekend with a hamstring problem, his presence is vital for the Magpies. Hughton said: "He is playing very well. The things we have asked from him - a mobility in is game and the most important thing as a striker is that you are scoring goals - is what he has been able to do for us."
