Newcastle striker Andy Carroll has been named the north-east Football Writers' Association Young Player of the Year for 2010. The 21-year-old, who scored 19 goals as the Magpies claimed the Championship title and promotion back to the Barclays Premier League last season, edged out Sunderland midfielder and England Under-21 team-mate Jordan Henderson to claim the prize. Carroll's heroics also earned him third place in the senior award category behind Black Cats frontman Darren Bent and new Newcastle skipper Kevin Nolan. Manager Chris Hughton rewarded the Gateshead-born marksman for his efforts last season by handing him the coveted number nine shirt, and has seen him score four Premier League goals, including a hat-trick in the 6-0 win over Aston Villa, to date.
